Having lived in Texas for over a decade, I not only know good brisket and barbecue, but I truly miss it. We found this Texas-style barbecue place today and we are so pleased, I have to recommend it! The meat was tenderlicious, the black beans were better than home-made, the portions were generous and the cheese flan was absolutely the creamiest I've ever had. To top our experience, we met the owner, Sandy, who made us feel like guests in her own home! The next time you're craving BBQ, visit Charlie's in west Pines! :D

I've experienced a few BBQ places in the area, but this place pretty darn delicious! I went with my boyfriend and our group of friends and we were all first timers here. They offered free samples of all the meats so you know which one spikes your interest; I find this very convenient because of the other places, I had to hope the meat tasted good, and there were times I wished I ordered a different dish because that meat was too greasy or too salty but it's too late to return your order. I had particular interest in the pork butt; VERY flavorful. The server was also nice enough to accommodate our request in removing the fat (and one of our friends exclaimed something along the lines of, "Aww man, that's the best part!" and so the attentive server collected the fatty pieces and offered it to him on the sample platter, free of charge). The place looks quite cafeteria style in which you pay as you reach the end of the line, but the server was nice enough to let us pay after we ate our meal while he helped another group of people, so in that sense, it felt like a chill environment. He even asked us if there was anything in particular we wanted to watch on Netflix on the big flat screen TV mounted on the wall by our table. Location is good since it's in a busy plaza (along with other stores like Publix and Goodwill, and across the street from Walmart). The place itself was very clean; it didn't seem too busy the day we went, but I'm taking into account that it's also been raining that day as well. Now, back to the food. We got the rest of our order, and must I say, servings are very generous despite the fact the meat are paid by weight (1/2 to 1 lb). The basic salad we ordered, which we thought was enough for 1 serving, actually served all 4 of us. Funny part was that they threw in two extra cherry tomatoes on the side. We also got a big tub of their original BBQ sauce, which was absolutely delicious! I honestly want to know the recipe. And it was nice to have it on the side because I wanted to enjoy some bites without sauce (again, the meat are all pretty flavorful) and I appreciate the meat much more when it's not slathered in sauce. Everything was decently priced so our wallets didn't hurt as much. Definitely a must-go if you're craving good meat and good BBQ!

My first sign should have been that there was no one inside of this BBQ spot during lunch time, on a nice Saturday afternoon. I ordered the BBQ brisket sandwich and fries. Although the meat itself was very tender, it had no taste. After removing what was almost a majority of fat meat, I was left with a few skimp slices of brisket. My fries were soggy and not hot at all. I asked for extra BBQ sauce. The sauce is made in-house, I'm assuming, and has no taste AT ALL. Overall I was disappointed, especially because I flew here on my 30 minute lunch break, hoping to satisfy my BBQ craving. This place has potential if they found someone who knows how to season and really do BBQ because the location is ideal and the prices are decent. Will not be returning.

Place was amazing. Saturday afternoon lunch in between errands. We tried a fantastic sampler the cook offered us before ordering. Brisket. Pork, and sausage. We had the brisket. We had their own sauce on the side, it was fantastic. Cold beer to wash it down. Very reasonable and good portions. We will be back.

Finally something else than Pizza and Chinese in the neighborhood. Great little gem with amazing customer service and delicious food. Neil the manager on duty is a caring guy who knows his meats. He recommended the brisket and the sausage and they were on point. He told me that the owners are Cuban, so to my delight they had made Congri (black beans and white rice cooked together) as a side. Gave that a try and to my surprise it was extremely well made, and very tasty. It was not dry and had a slight smokey flavor. Neil also mentioned that they had delivery in the area for $2.00 dollars. Can't go wrong at all. Will be back for sure. If you stop by make sure to say hi to Neil.

I have been meaning to write an update for this place for a while. Today is the day! I have visited this restaurant several times since my first visit/review. The food and service continues to be very good. I actually think the food has gotten better. Keep up the good work.

Really good food and the service is amazing! I work in the plaza and they are also so welcoming, very large area to have lunch and good decor. The brisket, sausage and pork is soooooo freakin good, they always put a side of Mojo for me and it makes the meat really juicy! They are located in the silverlakes plaza next to Santinos and Publix. They are a new place but so far really good! Keep it up! Update: 3.30.2015 I give them a 5!! They have proven to me over these past 5 months that their food is always fresh, juicy, and their customer service is outstanding!! Keep it up!! Xoxo

For a place that just opened, I can definitely say that they're doing an excellent job! I went in once just to look around and the staff was super friendly and educational about their business, as you should be to bring in new clientele. They gave me a menu and talked to me about their cooking style and meat options, which made me go back later that week for the real thing. I called ahead for a pick up order and got the St. Louis ribs, which were amazing! Tender fall-of-tha-bone meat and a great smoky flavor. Despite the ribs being so good, my problem was with the BBQ sauce... It needs to be a bit more general for that specific BBQ flavor. It's OK to be original, but can't move away too much from the concept of BBQ sauce, which is essential to a BBQ joint. Coleslaw and Baked Beans were good =] I can't wait to go back and try more options like the Brisket, Sausage, and Pork Butt which I sampled. For a upcoming food business, any kind of criticism is always good. They will improve and get awesome at it. Great job, guys. Best of luck!

Excellent food, the bbq beans are great because there not too sweet and taste like home made not from a can. The sausage is great!.

It wasn't good. The staff is nice, the place has a great set up and it is in the neighborhood. With that being said. I ordered the 3 meat platter. The service was good but you can tell it is a family business and some of the family members are up on it and others don't know what the heck they are doing. They were low on meat and had to bring it out piece meal, not a good look when running a food business. Now to the food itself 1. The meat was bland. It didn't have the smokey flavor that I crave, the seasoning was only surface level and not intense. I know they didn't want to over season as many BBQ places do, but it needed more flavor. The brisket was a bit chewy, but moist. The chicken was moist but extremely bland. The pulled pork was good, but still it lacked flavor. The baked beans tasted straight out of Van De Camps old school pork and beans, not good at all. Mashed Potatoes were instant mashed potatoes and because they didn't put my beans in a container, they flew all over the mashed potatoes. 2. Prices are reasonable but the food also did not have a good aftertaste. South Florida just doesn't have good BBQ restaurants. Dixie Pig and Tom Jenkins are it. Shiver's and Sparky's are decent.

I was really hoping this place would be good since I live in the area and love some good BBQ. But where do I begin... the pulled pork was watery and a bad consistency. The ribs were pretty much all fat and no flavor. The corn was "water-logged" it definitely sat in a pot of water for hours. Baked beans tasted bad as well. And last but not least, the drinks were flat/stale. If the entire meal - meat, sides and drinks are all bad that is a complete failure :(

Great place! Very friendly and family oriented. Food is delicious. I had a three meat platter with brisket, sausage and pork butt. I also had cole slaw and potato salad as my two sides. It was heaven on earth! I couldn't get enough of it! To top that off I had some pecan pie for dessert and it truly was amazing. Best part- EVERYTHING is homemade!!! LOVED it!!!! Can't wait to go back. P.S. Great customer service!!!

Just ordered delivery from here on a Sunday.. The delivery person got there really fast and the food was amazing. We pretty much ordered everything on the menu.. Brisket which was my favorite, the ribs which I highly recommend, and the pork butt. We had the corn on the cob and the potato salad as sides, which were both delicious. The homemade BBQ sauce was really good too, with the perfect amount of seasoning where it didn't overpower the taste of the meat. We really enjoyed the food, and cant wait till next weekend to order again.

Daughters Girl Scout troop is seeing Mary poppins at the live theater in Pembroke Pines so we found this place via yelp. Thank you yelp! Amazingly the place was empty when we walked in and the guy working was watching the walking dead on their big tv. He immediately paused it and went to help us. And after he helped us he asked if it was okay to turn back on and when I told him my six year old couldn't watch it he immediately turned on a Madagascar movie for them. So nice! The girls were thrilled. All the girls ordered chicken nuggets, which were your standard chicken nuggets. But the "real food" was incredible. I got the two meat plate, and went with the sausage (which smelled incredible) and the pork butt which was what all the yelp reviews recommended. As they should. The pork butt was incredible. Great crust on it but super tender meat. Perfect amount of fat. The sausage was also really good, living up to the smell. For my two sides I got baked beans and potato salad. The beans were perfect. With nice chunks of meat in it. The potato salad was only okay, but I was so full from rest of food I didn't have room for it anyway. Wish this place was closer to me!

This is a difficult review to write because I believe if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all. I am going to try, using my favorite barbecue joint, Tom Jenkins, as a comparison. We have been searching for a barbecue restaurant close to the quality of TJ because it is not very close to home. So that is where I will start, Charlies is closer to home than Tom Jenkins. Where there is often a long wait at TJ, there was absolutely no wait at Charlies. As a matter of fact, it was 7:30 on Friday evening in Pembroke Pines and there was nobody else in the place. Hmm. At TJ you have to wait for them to cook your food. Not true at Charlies, where it us under a heat lamp waiting for you when you get there. At TJ, your diet goes straight to hell because the food is so moist and delicious. You will not have to worry about that at Charlies. TJ makes you decide between many tasty side items. Charlies makes it easy, limiting you to a few premade choices. Though I did not try it, some in my party complemented the root beer from the soda machine. Charlies does their part to steer you toward that delicious root beer because they do not serve Ice tea, and the Sprite and Diet Sprite were out. Be aware, those cagey people at Charlies dispense root beer from the soda fountain dispenser that says raspberry Ice Tea. You won't find a label for the root beer on the drink fountain. So, to sum up, different people look for different things when they go out to eat. If you are a person that doesn't like to wait, doesn't want to overeat, who prefers dry meat, doesn't like a lot of choices, don't like other diners around you when you eat, but love root beer, Charlies is the place for you. However, go there soon. I don't expect them to be there very long.

Great service but it stops there. The meats were flavorless and the sauce was unusual. Can't figure out what it taste like but it was not a great bbq sauce as that should be an important factor. The sides were not the typical BBQ sides and were just mediocre. I am sadly disappointed. However good luck to the business.

Place was completely empty but we were greeted by very friendly staff who even let us bring in pizza from next door for our kids who don't eat BBQ. I got the 1/4 chicken which looked unimpressive, they had no corn bread or Mac & cheese which was a major disappointment. Had the corn on the cob and mash as a side. My son got the pulled pork and baked potato. Chicken and mash was very good and flavorful which was a great surprise but the corn was totally water logged and inedible. My sons was fantastic, he loved it. Was kind of pricy at $24 for only 2 people and the place is very small but clean. Would go back.

This is the best thing to happen to me in West Pines in quite some time. Family owned business. Great location. The taste of the meats is awesome. I really like their food. Nice staff. If you like BBQ, you have to check this little place out. So what if they are a family owned business. We need to support our local business and families. Especially if they are doing good work. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I love the food here.

Great BBQ place close to home. Family owned and very friendly from the moment you walk. We were given presentation and decided to share the the four meat combo platter which had beef brisket, pork butt , pulled pork and sausage. we opted for the beans and french fries for the sides.. Everything was good and fresh. Place is very clean and great addition to the area. They also have delivery service.

It could be more than 3 stars if you add a different BBQ sauce. The staff is wonderful and you can tell the guys know and love their meats. The brisket is amazing, as is the sausage. But then we took home the order and tried it with their "super awesome special" BBQ sauce and our faces fell. The sauce is a combination of brown gravy, something slightly bitter, ketchup and maybe a HINT of a standard BBQ sauce. We were disappointed. Look - I get it that you're proud of your sauce, but not everyone will be. You're a new restaurant and you can still make your sauce available, but for now please consider having (and including in every order!!!) a standard sauce like Sweet Baby Ray's. I live a couple of blocks from here and would LOVE for you guys to do well enough to become a local favorite. You know your meats. Just do something about the sauce. Also - with your Miami Cuban heritage, you should consider making more interesting side dishes. The sides were okay, but not amazing. How about a Mofongo (I know, it's not Cuban, whatever it's awesome) or Marquitas or an awesome rice/Moro offering. Thanks again - I hope you guys stick around and good luck!

I'm from Texas so I know good BBQ and this place is a close 2nd to my Dad who is the BBQ Master. We got a bit of everything: sausage, brisket and pulled pork. All was flavorful with just the right amount of seasoning. I don't know why people said negative things about the sauce, it's great! Homemade, lots of spices and adds a little kick to any of the meats. The staff was great, they even let me taste the sauce since I was hesitant from reading the bad comments on Yelp. We also got bbq beans and potato salad which were also very good. Definitely underrated...Go there but go hungry.

I hate to blast a new place that just opened but I feel that any restaurant auctioneer should hand them a card because they won't last a year....I walked in and stand there waiting for someone to help me because everyone was to busy kissing there friend who walked in...Finally a guy walks up with one glove on and one glove off. I order there St Louis ribs they were very dry and seemed like they were sitting for who knows how long..The ribs were $10.99 for 5 ribs some canned beans and a mashed potatoes mix. He then grabs a roll from a bag of rolls from Publix with his bare hand. I ordered two other meals one was chicken one was pork lion. The BQ sauce on everything was so sweet we washed it off the chicken and pork because we couldn't eat it...BTW all meats came out of the same pan......" I guess they don't plan on serving people who don't like pork on everything" Also they we're sitting under a heat lamp for who knows how long....I understand they are new..very disorganized and zero cooking skills but hey maybe they will become the 1% that makes it.....

First off I'll say that the food was very good and I enjoyed everything I ate (brisket, homemade potato salad, baked beans, and fried apples for dessert). However, the wait was absurdly long with 4-5 helpers behind the buffet line and while we were eating, others were waiting 10 mins in line too. There seems to be a lot of disorganization, but having just opened, I guess it's to be expected. Because I enjoyed the food, I'll try it again and adjust the score, once they work the kinks out.

Went here for some Texas BBQ. Not what we got. Being a "misplaced Texan" I was so ready to dig in. They have no qualms saying it's more Cuban than Texas. Sauce is more mole than BBQ. Chopped pork is pretty good & the potato salad if great, but those are the only things I would order if we were to ever go back. I wish they had just gone with BBQ & not add the Texas on it.

Great service and delicious BBQ! The pulled pork was incredible! It's nice to see a family owned business where they are excited to greet you and are proud of their food as they should be. Well done! We will be back!

Very very friendly and family operated business. Lots of choices of meats and side dishes, with an interesting sweet and tangy BBQ sauce, that's a family recipe. We ordered the 4 meat platter, we only had two options for side dishes. Wish we had another side option since the sides were very small, but then again we were sharing the platter. All in all a very nice visit.

For those who have been visiting Charlie's for a while (from their Dania Beach location) this place still has the same good food. Brisket is great and so is anything on the menu. Service, always friendly.

The brisket was incredibly tender and the ribs fell off the bone! The BBQ sauce was awesome had a little something sweet we loved! I would also recommend the potato salad and beans! Glad to have them in the neighborhood and can't wait for the Mac &cheese and cornbread to be added to the menu. 5 stars on service too!

Place is great, finally a good bbq spot near me. I've had their sausage chicken and brisket at very good. What's real cool especially if you live alone and can't cook is they deliver. Btw try their desert way better then you'd expect.

Hubby and I were craving BBQ after a 30 mile bike ride at shark valley. I had read the mixed reviews but really wanted to like this place. Two real positives. When we walked in we were greeted by a great employee. Did not get his name, but he is planning on going in the Army. He asked if this was out first visit and mentioned there was a first time presentation that his cousin or brother gave. When that individual came out of the kitchen he was asked to give the presentation and he said not now...hmmm. While we were there we witness him being asked two other times to give the presentation and decline. So the counter guy proceeded to tell us about the different choices and give us some samples. We opted for the two meat combo and got sausage and pork loin with potato salad and beans. Hubby got a half rack of the St Louis ribs. There was some challenges with ordering my sides. I wanted fries and onion rings and the counter girl tried to explain costing and it got confusing. Hubby said I made her nervous and she was very apologetic. Claiming they were swamped. There were three other tables in the restaurant. One table was family members, one was a couple that the cousin/brother spent a lot of time at working on a catering event. the other two were two tops.. so I don't think that is really swamped, but they are new. Now for the food. The other positive was the st Louis ribs. Very tender and tasty. The sausage and pork loin were cooked well. Potato salad was good. Here is where is went south. The beans were bland, the onion rings were overcooked and the BBQ sauce needs a lot of work. No taste at all. I added three drops of the habanero sauce that was on the table and the taste improved a little. For a BBQ restaurant, the sauce needs to be the focal point. Disappointed and will not return unless the sauce improves dramatically.
